Girgaon Chowpatty

Girgaon Chowpatty – Information, History, Timings, Entry Fee

This place is known by the locals as “Chowpatty”, which means “beachside”. Girgaon Chowpatty is Mumbaiker’s favorite weekend destination. Most people come here to enjoy the mouth-watering street food served right next to the beach area.

This beach is located in the southernmost part of Mumbai city. It is located adjacent to the Marine drive promenade (2-3 km away).

Most people arrive at the Girgaon Chowpatty in the evening or late at night for dinner, but there’s a lot to do here early in the morning as well. Just avoid this place in the afternoon as it can get scorching hot.

I am writing this post to share with you the important travel details about Girgaon Chowpatty. I visited this place a few days ago. I am sharing some pictures as well.

History

Girgaon Chowpatty used to have four saltwater channels connecting to the Arabian ocean. “Chow” refers to four, and “Patty” means beach in the local language. At present, there’s only one channel connecting to the ocean, but the word “Chowpatty” is used for a beach or seaside area.

More on the history of this place: This beach is named after a village called “Girgaon”, which used to be a rural area about 100 years ago, but now has one of the highest valued real estate in the country.

The place was surrounded by Chawls and Wadis (inexpensive and small houses). But now you will see high-rise buildings and offices all over the place.

Timings

Since this is a public place with no gates or entry fees, it is open 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. You can walk into the beach area anytime you wish. However, I do not recommend going near the water after dark. There’s a lifeguard present during the day, but not at night.

Entry Fee

There’s no entry fee. It’s free of cost for everyone.
